The Sharks traded up with Nashville, acquiring the 46th pick and sending over 51 and a 2015 4th rounder. They selected Julius Bergman, a Swedish defenseman. Bergman is a puck moving offensive oriented defenseman who isn't afraid to be physical. I like this pick for the Sharks, he was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round but I think he's underrated. His downsides are that he can be seen as tentative. Julius is raw, so don't expect to see him in teal anytime soon. If development goes as planned he could top out as a top-4 mobile defenseman.
Bergman has very impressive physical characteristics. He sees the ice well and makes a good outlet. He pushes the puck up the ice and skates well. He's alert in all zones and uses his body and stick to disrupt opposing rushes.
The Hockey Writers
Julius Bergman showed his offensive talent this season with the Frolunda Indians J20 team. An fluid skater on the backend, Bergman tallied 34 points this season, leading the squad. He possesses vision up ice and makes a solid first pass out of the zone to break out. Iâm not really sure if he can quarterback a powerplay, per se, but he can be utilized as a weapon on the point. He has an accurate, powerful shot and isnât afraid to distribute the puck either.
A smart positional defenseman, Bergman may not be the largest blueliner, but he plays like he is. He lays crushing open ice checks and has great balance when trying to knock players off the puck. His physicality certainly benefits his overall style of play. Heâs still a raw talent that needs his defensive game rounded out as heâs sometime too eager to join the rush instead of be responsible in his own end.
Draft Site (Bill Placzek)
A longer term prospect who has shown glimpses as a good puck mover and decision-maker. Can join the rush and jump in as the fourth man and is strong on the puck. Plays a bit too tentative, as if he is unsure and can't decide when to commit, make the pass, or start moving and ends up out of position. The fact that he is has good size, but doesn't use it, and seems to get intimidated doesn't inspire scouts to call his name.
